When a Los Angeles-based writer approached architect Casey Hughes –then recent AIA prize winning graduate of SCI-Arc—she asked him to design a space that would be “open to the garden while remaining a comfortable and private space to write.” Hughes put on his thinking cap, read some Heidegger, and came up with this beautiful house in the hills of North Hollywood. The dark exterior is a cleanly geometric slatwork of untreated redwood siding, forming a marked visual contrast with the soft maple plywood walls inside. The house is a model of well-used light, including translucent bathroom walls and north-facing windows that help to keep the temperature down on even the most brutal 100-degree summer days in Southern California.
