The overall effect will hopefully reveal the significant work of our students and faculty, but also construct a productive sense of what lies in the space between the contributions and across the range of our distinct domains of practice.

The idea behind this book is quite simple. Every spread has been submitted by a current student or faculty member at the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University. At our school we study architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning and design. But we also address a range of other design-related topics. Our students become design professionals and scholars. We are also lucky to have a large cohort of doctoral students.

This book is arranged alphabetically with minimal editorial intervention. It is therefore closer to an archive than a conventional publication, and like an archive, the alphabetical arrangement constructs an archaeology of order and randomness within which multiple discourses are uncovered in their own duration. Contributors can be found according to the location of their name in the alphabet, but this logic also creates unexpected adjacencies and disciplinary juxtapositions.

Each page produces its own content and coherence as well as through its proximity and inclusion within a group of other contributions.

The overall effect will hopefully reveal the significant work of our students and faculty, but also construct a productive sense of what lies in the space between the contributions and across the range of our distinct domains of practice.
