When Casey Hughes started designing this studio for a documentary film editor in Studio City, Calif., he rejected the fishbowl effect found in modern houses with glass facades. He said that his client, a woman living alone, needed to feel ''comfortable and secure and protected'' but also wanted lots of natural light for her studio, a separate building behind her house. He resolved these competing needs with a two-story, 1,000-square-foot structure with an atrium cut into the facade and with skylights over a stairwell.
